Once it’s sent, the person disappears. Legitimate agencies don’t operate this way — payment happens in person, at the time of the visit, never in advance by e-transfer or gift card to a stranger online.
If anyone asks for money upfront to “hold” a booking, that’s the clearest single red flag there is. Walk away.
Red Flag #2: Photos That Don’t Match Reality
Stolen or heavily outdated photos are the second major pattern — professional modelling shots, images lifted from other profiles, or pictures that are years old. The giveaway is often a profile that looks too polished, with no casual or varied photos, or the same image appearing across multiple unrelated listings (a quick reverse image search can confirm this).
A legitimate agency invests in verification specifically because this problem is so common. Recent, unretouched photos — and a track record of consistency between the photo and the person — is what separates a real profile from a bait-and-switch.
Red Flag #3: No Real Booking Line, Only a Text Number or App
Scam listings often operate through a single anonymous number with no agency behind it, no website, and no way to verify anything. If something goes wrong, there’s no one accountable and no paper trail. A legitimate agency has an established phone line, a real website with published rates, and staff who answer consistently — not a burner number that goes dark after the transaction.

A rate dramatically below the market average is almost always bait. Either the advertised person doesn’t exist, the price balloons once you’ve committed, or it’s a setup for a different scam entirely.
